Goals for Butler Middle School’s CSIP 2019-2020

 

Attendance Goal:

In the 2019-2020 school year, BMS will aim to have 80% of our students on track each quarter with attendance.

As a sub goal, BMS will aim to have the percentage of students with disabilities and English Learners students on track with attendance each quarter at 80%.

 Behaviors Goal:  

85% of students will report feeling connected to school on targeted school climate survey.

Coursework: MI (Math) Goal:

60% of our students will be proficient or advanced on the Spring 2020 Math Inventory. 

Reduce the percent of students in below basic to 10% or less in each grade. 
80% of our Students with Disabilities and English Language Learners will grow at least 50 pts. Each testing window. 

Coursework: RI (Reading) Goal:

  • 80% of our students will be proficient or advanced on the Spring 2020 RI
  • 6th grade with 5% or less in Below Basic and 20% or less in Basic
  • 7th grade with 4% or less in Below Basic and 16% or less in Basic
  • 8th grade with 4% or less in Below Basic and 11% or less in Basic

  1. Welcome – Introductions
  2. Approve last meeting minutes
    • Monica Alm made a motion to approve the November meeting minutes, Lori Carter 2nd the motion, all in favor.
  1. School Safety (Doug)

  • Doug reviewed the School Safe Walking Route,
  • Issues and Concerns:
  • There have not been any boundary or street changes from last year.
  • Bus loading/unloading zone: biggest concern is parent pickup/drop off in the area. this is an education issue.
  • Doug will add to the City Issues: Additional Crossing Flags at all the crosswalks.
  • This time of year it is very dark and parents are concerned about the crossing on 2700 E, Rec Center at Banbury.
  • We will look into getting lighted Crossing/Stop Signs for the crossing guard.
  • We have hired Stephanie McDonald to help with the drop off area. She is doing a great job. We will also look into adding more signage to continue to improve the flow of traffic.
  • Cottonwood Heights is in the process of adding sidewalk on 2600 E.
  • Review of January Evacuation Drill:
    • Per state law we are required to have an evacuation drill within the first 10 days back after a holiday break.
    • We had the drill on Thursday, January 9th at the End of 6th period, it took less than 3 minutes to evacuate everyone.
  1. Review CSIP Data from Mid-Year (Paula)

  • Landtrust and TSSA budget:
  • The addendum was approved, so we took the three (3) 17 hour aid positions and turned them into one (1) 35 hour position; Stephanie McDonald. *$25,000
  • August PD: we had more participate than planned so we spent a little more than budgeted.
  • Book Study: the 2 books are Visible Learning for Literacy and Text-dependent Questions, Pathways to Close and Critical Reading, our first discussion will be this Friday, January 17th.
  • Structured Discussions/PD: we pulled the core teachers for a day to look at the data and see what needs to be done to improve our scores.
  • Co-Taught PD: Time for the Special Ed and General Ed teachers to plan and discuss the needs of their students.
  • $8,000 to help with the Illustrative Math books. The school board did approve a $20 class fee to help cover the large cost as well. So we shouldn’t need as much to help cover the cost in the future. We have another $5,000 earmarked to help cover Illustrative Math supplies. We will hold off until May to do the Journal Entry until we see where we end up on our textbook budget.
  • News ELA $: Now that we have more information the teachers are leaning towards Reading Counts, the 8th grade is currently using part of the program, Read 180.
  • Art iPad lab has been ordered, we set aside $16,000 and only spent $13,300.
  • Behavior:
    • Lunch reward program run by Mrs. Griffiths; students purchase a pass with either 10 GREAT Bruin cards or show their GOLDEN BRUIN Pass. They get to participate in fun activities/games during their lunch.
  • Attendance:
    • Build a Bruin—43 1st periods classes.
      • 42 classes have earned the Build a Bruin award at least 1 time
      • 38 have earned the award twice
      • 34 have earned the award 3 time and got to Spin the Wheel of prizes
      • 26 have earned it 4 times
      • 22 have earned it 5 times
      • 8 have earned it 6 times and got to Spin the Wheel again
      • and 1 class has now earned the award 7 times.
    • Over the last 3 years we have gone from 91 students with attendance problems to 31 students.

      • School Connectedness
        • 765 GREAT postcards have been sent to 563 students
          • 361 students have received 1 postcard,
          • 134 students have received 2 postcards,
          • 29 students have received 3 postcards,
          • 11 students have received 4 postcards,
          • and 1 student has received 5.
  1. LandTrust/CISP Goals
    • In overall Achievement and Growth we received “Commendable”
      • English saw an increase of almost 4% from last year.
      • Math saw an increase of 4%, we were a little higher than the district average and 12 points ahead of the state average.
      • Science went from 62% to 63% 2 years ago and this year we went up to 70%. Again we are above the district and state averages.
      • Our English Language Learners, 25 students, are in the “Developing” area. Their progress was at 33% overall. We have some work to do there.
      • Overall growth of 77.6%, Outstanding, we are ahead of the district and state.
    • Butler Middle School is #2, we received a 91 out of 150 possible points. Socially and economically we should be in 4th place, Outstanding! Butler Middle received 91 out of 150 points.
    • CSIP will be renamed/change to TSSP
    • BLT will be spending Feb 12 looking at this data and making recommendations
  1. Registration Timeline/Update
    • Feb 4th—5th grade orientation, 6th/7th grade registration assemblies
    • Feb 5th—5th grade Open House, 8th grade Brighton Assembly (@ BMS)
    • Feb 6th—Brighton Parent Night (@ BMS)
    • Feb 10th—BMS Course Request Cards Due to ELA teacher
    • February—collect course request numbers from students/review permits and boundary student numbers to determine how many permits we can facilitate. We have reviewed overall numbers and permits. Currently our incoming 6th is at 278, 7th grade at 327, and 8th grade at 316.  At the end of this month, we will look at open enrollment permits, likely accepting 10-20 6th grade.  7th and 8th grade permits from this point forward will be placed on a waiting list for next year.  We will look at permits and numbers again towards the end of June and the beginning of the school year.
    • March—look at funding and request numbers to determine courses for next year
    • April/May—create school schedule for next year—run numbers to see the best combination of courses each period.
    • June/August—work with counselors to finalize student schedules
    • August—Parents register students online
    • ~August 10—Schedules available
    • August 14—6th Grade Orientation
    • August 17—School Starts
  • No 6th Grade Honors—Math/ELA
  • Not all incoming 6th graders have the same data to pull from, making it difficult to determine their ability.
  • Students can still earn Honors in their Math and ELA class by working with their teachers.
