Goals for Butler Middle School’s CSIP 2020-2021

 Attendance Goal:

In the 2020-2021 school year, BMS will aim to have 85% of our students on track each quarter with attendance in all grades and student groups.  We define on track as students missing less than 10% (green and yellow).

Behaviors Goal:  

Behavior – 85% of students will report feeling connected to school on targeted school climate survey. We will average the last 3 data questions related specifically to connectedness from the survey.

Coursework: MI (Math) Goal:

75% of our students will be proficient or advanced on the Spring 2021 Math Inventory (MI). 
5% or less in Below Basic and 20% or less in Basic in each grade level by the end of the school year.
75% of our SWD, ELLs, and students in the Below Basic level will grow at least 50 points or one level in the January and April testing windows.

Coursework: RI (Reading) Goal:

  • Honor Steele made a motion to approve the minutes from the January Meeting. Debbie Durtschi 2nd the motion and all in favor.
  1. Review of LandTrust/TSSP signing document (Paula)
  • Informational today – next meeting we will vote to approve the plan.

We will need everyone to sign in person—we will have this in the Main Office.  You can come in on Friday with less people around.  If you are uncomfortable with signing in person, please let Paula know through email or a phone call.

  1. COVID Update (Paula)
    • Our Online to In-person numbers have shifted a little. We are currently at 135 on line and 760 in person.
    • Number of cases have stayed low. Our community has done a great job, none of our exposure/quarantines has been school related. We are currently in the 1-5 group for quarantines.
  1. PTC—Feb. 23/24 (Sara)
    • Sign up information was emailed Tuesday, February 16th
    • All Appointments will be online. Teachers will be sending out more information by the end of the week with expectations, a “Frequently Asked Questions” document and how to communicate with teachers if not signing up for an online appointment.
    • Tuesday morning Sara will email out a document will the teachers meeting links.

  • Build a Bruin – in past years this has been based on attendance. With the need for quarantining we have had to shifted the Goal and how those puzzle pieces are earned. Some examples: all students have their Badge on, all Devices/Chromebooks are fully charged, whole class got 80% or better on starters…
    • 1 – 22 (just under half our classes have completed a Bear Puzzle of 10 pieces – 5 pieces for elective classes)

  • Office Referral Data – BLT asked for more specific data on ODR’s, they wanted the numbers broken down by race/ethnicity:

    • Multiple Races – 19/8%
    • 15% of the office referrals are SpEd students. 
  1. Review Building Leadership LandTrust/TSSP Suggestions (Paula)

LandTrust/CISP Goals—LandTrust/TSSP due on April 13th

  • Goal #1 Attendance Action Plan: Increase the attendance of students by making attendance expectations more visible and explicit to students and parents systematically throughout the school year and building capacity in student/teacher relationships.
    • Build a Bruin: we have discussed moving the incentive from 1st period to maybe 5th period and focus on tardies and better Spin the Wheel prizes.
    • GOLDEN Bruin Activities: this year we focused on work completion.
    • Expectations and Routines: we have chosen to remove this action plan item. Makeup work and missing assignments have not been as bis as issue for students who miss school now that everything in on Canvas.

  • Goal #2 Behavior Action Plan: To build community and connection between students and improve student-teacher relationships through Grade Level Teaming, Social Emotional Learning Lessons, Who Do You Know/2 by 10, student work groups-counselors/social worker, Team Building activities, Restorative Practices.

  • Goal #3 Reading Action Plan: To improve student use of critical reading strategies and build student skill in reading complex texts, Butler Middle School will improve the quality and intentional use of literacy strategies (i.e. close reading and structured discussions) throughout the school year. To address the needs of our readers in ELL, SWD and BB, we will intentionally add additional instructional support through Explicit Vocabulary, Read 180, and individual classroom scaffolds.

  • Goal #4 Math Action Plan: Our Math Growth is Highest in the District for Middle Schools. To improve student use of critical thinking strategies throughout the problem solving process, Butler Middle School will emphasize teacher clarity strategies including data walls, rigorous assessments and success criteria/objective trackers. With guidance from the math department, other departments will choose one math practice standard to focus on each month.

  1. Course Requests/Registration Time Line (Paula)

    • Electives Year Long – A/B schedule/electives are every other day
    • February— we collect course request numbers from students/review permits and boundary student numbers to determine how many permits we can facilitate. We have reviewed overall numbers and permits. Currently our incoming 6this at 326, 7th grade at 307, and 8th grade at 315.  At the end of this month, we will look at open enrollment permits, likely accepting a few in 7th grade and then place the remaining students on a waiting list for next year.  We will look at permits and numbers again towards the end of June and the beginning of the school year.
    • March—look at funding and request numbers to determine courses for next year
    • April/May—create school schedule for next year—determine which combinations of courses each period fits the most student requests.
    • June/August—work with counselors to finalize student schedules, look at additional student requests
    • August—Parents register students online

    • Review of Snow Day (Paula) – Went Great, appreciated the advance notice. Most classes went well and followed the Friday outline/expectations.
    • Additional Meeting: A motion was made by Paula Logan to add an additional meeting on March 31st to finalize the plans, Honor Steele 2nd the motion and all in favor.
