Greetings,
Wow! What a busy week we’ve had. The week started out on the chilly side but warmed up by the end of the week for us. It’s wonderful to see students enjoying time outside. After school activities were in full swing with Bruins’ Den, grade-level math help and Robotics League. Our Mathcounts Team began meeting this week as well. On Wednesday, Golden Bruins received a full size candy bar during lunch as part of National Chocolate Day. Thursday was quite exciting with all of the Halloween costumes and, well, we did evacuate the building during 5th period. Hopefully you received our email yesterday about the alarm. I am so impressed with our students, teachers, and staff. We were out of the building in 3 ½ minutes and back in classrooms less than 30 minutes later. Oh, and our staff managed to get lunches prepared and delivered to 6th period classes for students to take home with them. Quite an impressive week!
Wild Weather Days – With the weather changing as we move into the winter months, we will allow students to enter the building at 7:30 a.m. when the temperature “feels like” 22 degrees or below. For any day that we are letting students in, you should receive a Skylert notification. At 23 degrees, students will line up and wait for their teachers to escort them into the building. Students are always welcome to go outside during lunch but will not be required to line up outside if the temperature is at or below 22 degrees. We encourage students to get fresh air and take a break during lunch, so the outside option is always open.
Daylight Savings – Remember we “Fall Back” this weekend. Set your clocks back one hour on Sunday morning. This is my favorite time change as we get an extra hour of sleep. And this year I need it!!! With the time change, it will be dark in the mornings. Please remind your child to be cautious, use crosswalks, etc. Thank you!
The BMS Veterans’ Wall – Last day for submissions is Thursday, November 5th. Each year Butler Middle School puts up a Veterans’ Wall. This is a tradition to honor the people who have served in the various branches of the military. We will be posting the name of each Veteran, a picture, the branch of service, years of service, name of the conflict or war during which the Veteran served, and the name of the person submitting and the relationship (friend, uncle, GG grandfather, mom, neighbor, etc.). It can be anyone who is special to you and your family—a close friend, family, a neighbor, etc. Names are submitted to Ms. Van Haaften in the GREAT Room. We will collect names through November and put the names on our Veterans’ Wall. The wall will stay up through Veterans’ Day, November 11th. We also use the information to put together a slideshow. It is a GREAT opportunity to recognize some of the people who have sacrificed for our county and for our rights and freedoms. If you have someone in your life who has served, we encourage you to submit that information. Thank you!
Report Cards – Report cards were finalized this week. They will be available to view via Skyward this weekend. To view your child’s report card login to Skyward “Family Access” using your family login and password. If you do not have a device to see this information, please call the main office at (801) 826-6800 and our staff can print one for you.

Ongoing Items – These items have been addressed before, but may be needed again.
- Bruins Den – November 3, 4, and 5. The Bruins Den is available on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday afternoons from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m. in the GREAT Room. This is a time for students to complete homework and/or get help from teachers. Each afternoon, two teachers are available in the GREAT Room to assist with student homework. Students can work on their own or get assistance from a teacher. Computers are available for homework.
- Staying Safe at School
- Face coverings must be worn at all times except when eating and drinking. We are seeing a lot of masks off at the end of the school day with groups of friends much closer than 6 feet.
- Physical distancing will be required when possible. Again, our concern is at the end of the school day.
- Hand sanitizing is expected as you enter and exit rooms. Sanitization stations have been strategically placed throughout the building.
- Water Bottles--we do encourage the use of water bottles (we have two fill stations and a third coming). Drinking fountains do still work, but it is a lot of touch points.
- Students (parents) and staff will be asked to complete a symptomchecker-updated.pdf prior to coming to school
- Virtual Learning Fridays
- BMS Virtual Learning Fridays.docx : Please read for information about the change to Virtual Learning Fridays.
- Friday Vitual LEARNING Checklist_BMS.pdf
- Free Sack Meals will be made available free of charge for the remainder of the school year.
