Digital Citizenship Plan -Jennifer Van Haaften Media Specialist

  • Jennifer Van Haaften is over Digital Citizenship Coordinator. Went over the safety guards for Butler Middle School. The first week of January is Digital Citizenship Week.
  1. Filtering information – Canyons uses Content Filtering over the years has become stricter and now has guidelines and levels. There are more restrictions on what students can use and view. Teachers can use You Tube videos on Canvas courses if the Teacher has completely previewed it and it has a copyright. There is a place you can go called Technology Connect portal where you can set filtering limits for your students. These can be stricter than what the district sets. To be aware sometimes setting stricter limits can affect certain assignments.
  1. The Management system we use goes through Google This year they have one login for the class link that works well. This is how they access the apps used in their classroom. In terms of supervision, Teachers have Lan School to see what students are doing on their chrome books at all times. Note that, the majority of time, the Teachers are up and walking around to supervise. This is a common practice at Butler Middle School. Teachers are actively engaged with students.
  1. Thrive Time -Students receive digital citizenship lessons once a Every Teacher teaches this in their classrooms once a month. In addition, we have lessons in our Digital Literacy and CCA classes. Mrs. Van Haaften is in the classrooms as well, teaching information that ranges from literature to research and using digital sources. Thrive time is also the emotional and social curriculum which is character building that was created by the district. Continual conversations are in the classrooms about appropriate behavior and how to use technology appropriately.
  1. Family Education – There are family resources available through Canyons School District website. If you go to “Students and Parent,” then go to “Family Connections,” and click on “Technology for Families.” This will give helpful information to guide not only your student but options for
  1. Web restrictions -Technology connect There is where you can login as a Parent and you can have the opportunity to change the access your student has at school. You can’t open it and place more restrictions, for example, you can put them at an elementary access. There is an extreme, but that is only if they have been put on a strike system. Parents and Administration receive those notifications when they have gone outside of what is allowed. The three-strike policy is as follows:

*Warning to Parents and to make sure the Parent has a conversation with their student.

*When there will be a conversation with the Parents, Administration and the

*The account will be locked.

Parents are notified on all three of these strikes.

**Cell Phone policy questions have been asked in the past. Students are not allowed to have their cell phones out in class, not at lunch or during education time. They should have them turned off and in their backpacks. This is now a District policy. Our school has been following this policy for years. We have seen a dramatic drop in cyberbullying and an increase in their social skills.

Questions and concerns: 10 minutes

**Fines are associated with the frames of the keyboard, broken screens, cords that have been lost or damaged. They are case by case situations when it comes to damage.

**Administrators handle these cases with the Parent and student. Question: Do we replace chrome books? Yes, they are replaced every 3-4 years. Digital questionnaire and answers were given to the Community Counsel members and recorded by Bryan Rudes.

Counselor’s Update -Jenny Baker

Reality Town was a huge success. We have learned a lot from last year and feel like those changes were successful. 8th graders were engaging and well behaved. We are in the middle of our CCR (College, Career Readiness). If you have an 8th grader you should’ve had one or have an appointment set up. They should be done by December. We talk about High School, College, Trade School or interests and careers they may be directed too.

We are looking at creating lessons by grade and their needs. For instance, our 6th graders on making friends and building those relationships dynamics. Our Social worker, Traci Player is working on workshops and having those available for students based on their needs. Each lesson lasts around 6 weeks, and the group size can range from 3-5 students.

Bryan mentioned the importance of doing the Connectiveness Survey. These are questions that help understand the needs of our students, their concerns and struggles.

The groups will begin in January.

PTSA Update -Sara Vranes

Volunteer and demand for Reality Town for ah graders. It is 3-4 hours and takes around 60 volunteers to make it work. This week PTSA is doing kindness week. They are writing notes to Teachers during lunches. They focus on kindness to Teachers, other students and to yourself. Parent Square has gone out to collect food for food bags before holiday break.

This is for families in need and are distributed or picked up before the break. We haven’t met our goal yet, so anything, would be helpful.
