The new Butler Middle School is designed around the concept of integrated curriculum, collaborative learning and teaching. The 177,000 square foot building will be divided into smaller populations by utilizing small learning centers or “Education Communities”. The Education Communities are comprised of science classrooms/labs, project classrooms and teacher offices.
A committee of over 30 teachers, administrators, patrons and students, made up the design/building committee. VCBO Architecture, as facilitator, spent several months developing the concept plan and schematic design through multiple meetings, numerous onsite tours, and various work sessions with the committee. The final design is a two story structure that incorporates the latest state-of-the-art technology.

The key to the design solution is the arrangement of the classrooms into three separate, grade-level specific academic learning centers, each surrounding and connected to a lively central collaboration space. A fourth academic house contains arts, computer science, shops and FCS classrooms. These academic “houses” provide a highly flexible, open, and extremely visible environments for group collaboration, which foster critical student/student and student/teacher relationships. Each house also contains planning offices, separate student and faculty toilet rooms, and grade-specific lockers, promoting a cohesive environment in which students may live and learn.

Letter from Superintendent Doty

Dec. 15, 2010

Thanks to you and voters throughout the Canyons School District, the District held its first successful bond election in June 2010, which authorized the Board of Education to issue up to $250 million in bonds for the construction and renovation of school facilities in our borders.

We are pleased that one of the first projects to be funded by this bond is a complete rebuild of Butler Middle School. This project, which is scheduled to begin in summer 2011, will completely replace the existing school with a state-of-the-art new facility.

A Town Hall Meeting will be held on Thursday, Jan. 20, 2011, at 6 p.m. in the Butler Middle School Auditorium. There, District officials will provide information and seek input from you on the following:

·         Butler Middle School facility concepts by VCBO Architects

·         Costs and construction timeline

·         Services for Butler Middle School students during the period of construction

This meeting will deal exclusively with issues related to Butler Middle School. We acknowledge many of you also have students at Butler Elementary School, and we are pleased with the community’s desire to learn more about the elementary school building project. However, public meetings on the future of Butler Elementary School will be held in the months to come.

We invite you to join us on Jan. 20, and look forward to working closely with you in the coming months as we move forward with the plan to replace the existing Butler Middle School with a state-of-the-art educational facility for students and employees.

Sincerely,

David S. Doty, Superintendent
